Eligibility
- Hold at least a Private Pilot certificate (airplane).
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Hold a current FAA medical (practical for training/checkride).
Knowledge (Ground)
- Receive and log instrument ground training from an authorized instructor or complete an approved home‑study/course covering IFR regs, procedures, charts, weather, approaches, etc.
- Pass the FAA Instrument Rating Airplane (IRA) Knowledge Test.
Flight Experience (61.65(d))
- 50 hours cross‑country flight time as PIC.
- At least 10 hours of that must be in airplanes.
- 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including:
- At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from a CFII (airplane).
- One IFR cross‑country with a CFII that:
- Is at least 250 NM,
- Is conducted under an IFR flight plan,
- Proceeds along airways or ATC‑directed routing,
- Includes an instrument approach at each airport,
- Includes three different kinds of instrument approaches using navigation systems.
- At least 3 hours of instrument training from a CFII within the 2 calendar months preceding the practical test.
Simulator/Training Device Credit
- You may credit some instrument time in our approved simulator BATD per 61.65. Up to 10 hours can be credited towards your add on.
- Regardless, of if you decide to take part in this cost saving you must still have at least 15 hours of instrument flight training with a CFII in the aircraft category.
