Eligibility
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Hold at least a Private Pilot certificate (airplane).
- Hold a current FAA medical (Second Class is required to exercise commercial privileges).
Knowledge (Ground)
- Receive and log ground training covering commercial topics per 61.125.
- Pass the FAA Commercial Pilot Airplane Knowledge Test (CAX).
Flight proficiency (Training areas)
- Receive and log training covering the commercial airplane areas of operation per 61.127(b)(1) (advanced maneuvers, navigation, emergencies, night ops, etc.).
Aeronautical experience (ASEL) — 61.129(a)
Minimum 250 hours total flight time as a pilot, consisting of:
- 100 hours in powered aircraft, including 50 hours in airplanes.
- 100 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC), including:
- 50 hours in airplanes.
- 50 hours cross-country; at least 10 hours of that in airplanes.
- 20 hours of training (dual) on the commercial areas of operation that includes:
- 10 hours of instrument training (at least 5 hours in a single‑engine airplane).
- 10 hours in a complex airplane, turbine-powered airplane, or a Technically Advanced Airplane (TAA).
- One cross-country of at least 2 hours in a single‑engine airplane in day VFR, >100 NM straight‑line distance from departure.
- One cross-country of at least 2 hours in a single‑engine airplane in night VFR, >100 NM straight‑line distance from departure.
- 3 hours in a single‑engine airplane in preparation for the practical test within the preceding 2 calendar months of the test date.
- 10 hours solo in a single‑engine airplane, or 10 hours performing the duties of PIC with an instructor on board (supervised PIC), including:
- One cross‑country totaling at least 300 NM with landings at 3 points, and one segment of at least 250 NM straight‑line distance between takeoff and landing.
- 5 hours night VFR with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop at an airport with an operating control tower.
Tests
- Pass the CAX knowledge test.
- Pass the Commercial Pilot practical test (checkride) per the Airman Certification Standards.
